Walk With Me for JT
Joe’s Story
I am Joe Thompson a former professional footballer, but I like to think that’s more of a strap line.
I am a loving father and husband that started his footballing journey at the age of nine at the famous Manchester United academy. After spending seven wonderful years there I was released aged 16. I soon forged a career in the Football League, playing for the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Rochdale, Carlisle and Bury.
Devastatingly at the age of 23, I was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, which meant I had to undergo a biopsy followed by immediate chemotherapy. Fortunately after 6 months of treatment I was told I was in remission. I managed to return back to football. But whilst playing for Rochdale the cancer returned for a second time 3 years later.
After having more intense chemotherapy, I then underwent a stem cell transplantation, effectively the most potent chemotherapy out there. After 18 days in isolation I was again told I was all clear and could begin to slowly build my life and career back. Before retiring from the game, some of my career highlights were facing Tottenham Hotspur’s at Wembley in a FA Cup replay. Scoring one of the most memorable goals in the EFL history as I managed to get the only goal that kept Rochdale AFC in League One on the final day of the season. But probably the most memorable moment for myself has to be being awarded with the prestigious Sir Tom Finney Award in front of all my peers.
Since retiring I have become an extremely passionate public speaker; featuring for some huge corporations and working with various Premier League and Championship clubs around the country as part of the EFL Life Skills programme. I regularly present for Manchester United TV, analysing the latest matches and discussing the futures of Manchester United’s academy players and was fortunate enough to host BBC Squad Goals on the radio.
My drive is a constant desire to inspire and change the game of football for the better. I constantly do my upmost to give back. But in March 2024 I was told for the third time that the cancer had come back again. So I am currently undergoing treatment at The Christie’s in Manchester but have set myself a challenge which I would love everyone to get involved with.
A 21 mile walk from Manchester United the club where it all started to Rochdale Football Club where it all finished. We will be going via some of the other Greater Manchester’s grounds like Salford City, Manchester City and Oldham. It will be a great day and challenge full of laughter, fun and memorable conversations.
There are treatments that I am undergoing that I need to finance for myself. The support of those taking part means the world to me and my family. Together we aim to raise as much money as possible to support this ongoing treatment and also the pioneering testing that could help countless lives in the future.
I’m so pleased that we have the support of an increasing number of ex pro’s who will be participating on the day too. The first players to sign up include Joleon Lescott, Stephen Ireland and Chris Kirkland. My family and I would be honoured and really appreciative if you come and join us on the day!
